Meie, Eesti teatrivaldkonna esindajad – näitlejad, lavastajad, dramaturgid, teatritöötajad ja kultuuriorganisatsioonid, väljendame sügavat muret ja solidaarsust Gruusia kolleegi Andro Chichinadze ning tema kaaslastega.

Meile teadaolevalt mõisteti Andro Chichinadzele kaheaastane vanglakaristus pärast osalemist valitsusvastastel meeleavaldustel. Mitmed rahvusvahelised organisatsioonid on viidanud, et tema kohtuprotsess ei vastanud õiglase kohtupidamise standarditele ning süüdistused on olnud poliitiliselt motiveeritud. Ta arreteeriti 2024. aasta detsembris protestides osalemise tõttu ning mõisteti süüdi väidetava „avaliku korra häirimise“ eest koos teiste meeleavaldajatega.

Oleme murega jälginud, et mitmed tema kolleegid on lahkunud teatrist protestiks tsensuuri vastu, kui eemaldati vangistatud kolleegi toetuseks välja pandud plakat. See näitab, et surve ei piirdu üksikisikuga, vaid mõjutab laiemalt kogu teatrikogukonda ja sõnavabadust.

Teater on alati olnud koht, kus ühiskond saab end peegeldada, küsimusi esitada ja võimu kõnetada. Kunstnike karistamine rahumeelse kodanikupositsiooni väljendamise eest on vastuolus demokraatlike väärtuste ja loomevabaduse põhimõtetega.

Eesti teatriväli, mis on ise kogenud erinevaid ajaloolisi survemehhanisme, peab oluliseks seista kolleegide kõrval olukordades, kus kunstivabadus ja põhiõigused on ohus. Me näeme Gruusias toimuvat hoiatava näitena sellest, kui habras võib olla loominguline ja kodaniku vabadus.

Kutsume Gruusia ametivõime üles tagama õiglast kohtumenetlust, austama sõna- ja kogunemisvabadust ning vabastama Andro Chichinadze ja teised meeleavalduste tõttu vangistatud isikud.

Avaldame oma solidaarsust kõigi Gruusia kunstnikega, kes seisavad surve all, ning kinnitame, et nende hääl ei jää rahvusvahelises teatrikogukonnas kuulmata.

Appeal from the Theater Community in Support of Georgian Actor Andro Chichinadze

We, representatives of the Estonian theater community – actors, directors, playwrights, theater workers, and cultural organizations – express our deep concern and solidarity with our Georgian colleague Andro Chichinadze and his companions.

To our knowledge, Andro Chichinadze was sentenced to two years in prison for participating in anti-government protests. Several international organizations have noted that his trial did not meet the standards of a fair trial and that the charges were politically motivated. He was arrested in December 2024 for participating in protests and was convicted of alleged “disturbing public order” along with other protesters.

We have observed with concern that several of his colleagues have left the theater in protest against censorship after a poster displayed in support of their imprisoned colleague was removed. This shows that the pressure is not limited to an individual but affects the entire theater community and freedom of expression more broadly.

The theater has always been a place where society can reflect on itself, ask questions, and address those in power. Punishing artists for peacefully expressing their civic stance is contrary to democratic values and the principles of creative freedom.

The Estonian theater community, which has itself experienced various historical mechanisms of oppression, considers it important to stand by our colleagues in situations where artistic freedom and fundamental rights are under threat. We view the events in Georgia as a cautionary example of how fragile creative and civil liberties can be.

We call on the Georgian authorities to ensure a fair trial, to respect freedom of speech and assembly, and to release Andro Chichinadze and others imprisoned for participating in protests.

We express our solidarity with all Georgian artists who are under pressure and affirm that their voices will not go unheard in the international theater community.
